Why Focus on Conversation?

The Foundational Premises of Leading Sustainable Conversations

  • First premise: We create our collective future through the medium of conversation. Language is a social process. The way we talk and listen to each other — the words we use, the images we evoke and the feelings our conversations engender — profoundly influence the outcomes we create for ourselves, each other and our world.
  • Second premise: We are at a time in history when our need to talk together authentically with an eye toward the creation of a sustainable future is of paramount importance not only for the health of our own children, but for the health of the children of all species for all time
  • Third premise: The challenges of creating a sustainable world will be far easier to meet if we first turn our attention to learning to talk together in ways that ensure our conversations are sustainable.

The purpose of Leading Sustainable Conversations is to bring people together in dialogues that promote shared understanding, encourage possibility-seeking, coordinates actions, and includes reflection and learning so that the lessons of history become embodied and incorporated into future actions, instead of being endlessly repeated.
